The best art for bedroom walls is the art that tells your story! This can sound cheesy, but it holds true. With so many trends and looks constantly coming in and out of style in design, art can be trusted to show your personality. Art is an aspect of design that conveys so much of who you are, and I believe that finding art for bedroom walls can be a lot of fun and can even be a beautiful form of self expression.
Learning what your personal style is with interior design can feel daunting at first. And choosing what art to put on your walls can often be one of the scariest parts of that process. I’m here to help you make that process way easier, and yes, fun! There’s something so special about the feeling that you get when you walk into a room and love the way that it makes you feel. If your own bedroom isn’t making you feel this way, you’re in for a treat, because the art on your bedroom walls can change that.
This post will walk you through all 3 of the steps that you go through when you’re looking for art for bedroom walls.
Let’s get started!
1. What wall art do you like the most?
First things first, you’re going to select what medium of art you want in your bedroom. I like to keep it pretty simple here โ since you’re decorating walls, you could go with a print, painting, or photograph. You can find prints, paintings, and photographs at a range of price points, so it really comes down to personal preference.
Here’s an example of a print โ they can give your walls a more graphic look. There are so many different types of art prints out there, and prints are a really affordable option if you’re on a tight budget. If you’re ever not sure what art you like, finding a map from a place with some of your favorite childhood memories is always so fun. This map of Nantucket in my bedroom brings me so much joy!
This is an example of a painting. Not all paintings translate well to being wall art, and you’ll discover pretty quickly what you like and what you don’t like. Something I really like about this little garden painting is that you could pair it with another painting, hanging a slightly larger painting above or below it to create a gorgeous vignette. Paintings tend to add character and a very personal touch to a space (especially if they are original paintings), which I love.
Of course you know what a photograph is, but I wanted to share an example of a photograph that was created by a talented artist. The best photographers have the ability to transform the medium that we all have access to through our phones into something that is deeply meaningful and artistic.
The truth is, I love all three of these mediums! You really can’t go wrong with whichever you choose. If you feel like you still need some inspiration, I have a Pinterest board called “Art Inspiration” that you can look at to figure out what art you like best. Now onto the next step.
2. Where can you find the best art for your walls?
I am sooo eager to tell you that you can buy art here at Garland Collections, but we’re still growing! I can’t wait to share our first collection with you once it’s ready. For now I can share some of the places that I would look if I were searching for art for my bedroom walls. One of the best places that you can start looking to buy art is from local artists. I have a deep love for local artists. Not only are you supporting small business when you buy from them, you also get so much out of these works of art that are so unique, personal, and full of character. Art that has a story behind it will seriously add priceless character to your space. Finding local artists can be just a Google search away, and it’s definitely worth investigating in your area.
Etsy is such a helpful online resource if you’re not sure about the local art scene in your area. It gives you access to artists all over the world at varying price points. Honestly, even though I love Etsy, sometimes it can be super overwhelming because it has so many different options. I find that it can take a lot of time and patience to find art that looks beautiful, high quality, and fits all of the size dimensions that you’re looking for. Would you want me to create a blog post featuring some of my favorite Etsy stores? Let me know! For now, here’s a link to the Etsy store of Shadra Strickland โ she has a range of price points and has really beautiful work. This peach fine art print in her shop is so gorgeous, and it’s selling fast. Click here to shop on Etsy.
Another place to look for art is Tappan Collective. They work with artists to curate collections just like I am working on doing, and they have some interesting modern art. Their price points are a little bit higher, but they have some great works of art to choose from. For instance, this contemporary painting has some intriguing textural elements and color blocking, which I think is so fun! Click here to shop on Tappan Collective.
If you’re in a bit of a pinch with time or are on a tighter budget, Urban Outfitters Home has art that is pretty affordable. Their selection tends to be focused on what’s trendy, but if you’re going for a cheaper option I actually think that that’s the way to go. If you’re looking for something inexpensive, then you may want to swap it out in a few years, so go with what you like. One word of caution though: do not spend over $100 on art from Urban Outfitters! You could get original art for around that price point, and it will have so much more personality. This line drawing is cute though, just make sure you’re not overspending for something mass produced like this. Click here to shop on Urban Outfitters Home.
3. How should you hang up your art in your bedroom?
The dimensions for the art that you decide on for your room can vary pretty widely, but there are a few foolproof spots for hanging up art in your bedroom that you need to know about before you buy anything. Make sure that you check what measurements can fit in these different spots in your bedroom, so that your art fits in beautifully.
Hanging art above your headboard is one of the most natural places to work art into the design of your bedroom. It has a very seamless look, and works in most spaces. You also can layer in multiple works of art if you have the space. For example, I really love the look of having three works of art in a row above your headboard. If you have a lot of wall space there, experimenting with painter’s tape to see what different sizes of art work could fit is a really good idea.
Depending on what kind of bed frame and headboard you have, how you hang your art in this spot can vary. You can choose to center it, like we did in my house in this photo below, or you can place it closer to the headboard. If you have a canopy bed frame, I would recommend centering your art. If you have a standard bed frame, I would recommend placing your art so that the bottom of the frame is about 4 – 9 inches from the top of the headboard (or from the top of your pillows, if those come up higher).
After you hang up your art, you’re done! Now you have beautiful art for your bedroom walls. I know how transformed a space can feel after adding works of art that you love to your walls. That feeling is always worth the time and money spent, and you will be so glad that you did it in the long run.
