1. Wandering Jew Lilac – 2.5 inch Potted Plant – Tradescantia Fluminensis Lilac – House Plant
Shop now on Amazon
This plant is gorgeous and has the ability to showcase these beautiful purple stripes (and pinks and greens, too!) when it’s healthy. I absolutely love how it looks and am enamored with its stripes.
I definitely would only recommend this plant to people who are confident in their ability to nurture a plant and keep it healthy. Otherwise, it will lose its color. This isn’t a beginner friendly plant because it requires a lot of care and some plant knowledge.
For more beginner friendly plants, check out this blog post with the 5 best plants for beginners! I also have more beginner friendly options on this list, so keep reading ๐
2. AMERICAN PLANT EXCHANGE Hibiscus Live Plant, 3 Gallon, Double Peach Bloom
Shop now on amazon
Hibiscus flowers bring so much joy and life to your day. They’re so beautiful and delicate. And you can keep them inside to help create an environment that works well for them.
Warmth, humidity, and direct sunlight create a perfect environment for a hibiscus to thrive. If you’re like me and you know you can’t provide that (I live in the northeast, so it’s cold and dry all winter) keep reading because there are other colorful plants that can thrive in your environment.
3. Watercolor Purple Orchid
Shop now on The Sill
Look at that gorgeous purple color! I love this one, and it’s from The Sill which is a really reputable place to shop for plants online. Although they do have retail stores in some cities if you prefer to shop in person.
This is definitely pricey for a plant, but it is really beautiful. I think orchids tend to be more expensive, but this is probably the most expensive one I’ve seen. I love the color so much, though.
Also, orchids are not easy to care for. Every single orchid I’ve had has died ๐ญ so I wouldn’t recommend this plant to a fellow beginner. However, I have a few friends with green thumbs and they always manage to keep their orchids happy.
4. American Plant Exchange Calathea Medallion Live Peacock Prayer Plant, 6″ Pot, Indoor Outdoor Air Purifier
Shop now on Amazon
Not all colorful indoor plants have to have flowers or be super bright, and I love this understated purple peacock prayer plant. It has this gorgeous light green medallion on top of the leaves, and a dark purple underside.
I am so impressed with how affordable this plant is because it’s so pretty and it gets great reviews on Amazon. This plant is pet friendly, so if you have pets around the house, this is safe for them to be around without worrying.
5. Grafted Moon Cactus
Shop now on Rooted
A classic beginner friendly houseplant is the succulent. And this grafted moon cactus is so cute with its bright pop of orangey red on top. I’ve had one of these before and they’re very easy to care for. If you keep this plant really happy with lots of sunshine, it can even sprout pink flowers.
6. Bromeliad Vriesea Vogue
Shop now on The Sill
These plants have a special spot in my heart because I grew up with them around the house! My mom and my grandmother both love these plants (if I am remembering correctly, sometimes my mom tells me I’m way off lol).
I really appreciate how websites like The Sill, Bloomscape, and Rooted provide helpful information about how to care for the plant you’re looking at. They also provide info like whether or not a plant needs direct sunlight and if they’re pet friendly, which is so nice.
Shop Now on Bloomscape
These plants are pet friendly which I love. I always worry about my cats getting into plants, so it’s a relief to know these are not toxic for them. I love the Bloomscape trio because then you get one of each different color: orange, red, and purple.
7. Calathea “Maui Queen”
Shop now on rooted
This is another Calathea plant! So very similar to the one from Amazon (plant #4). I was interested in this shop Rooted because they have fair prices and lots of great plant options that you can order online.
8. Calathea Collection
Shop now on Bloomscape
Again, love a good trio! This one is a selection of calathea plants with different patterns on their leaves. And different leaf shapes. They’re all really cool and interesting in their own way. If you want more than one plant, this is a great option for you.
9. Begonia Jurassic Dino
Shop now on The sill
This is a funky little plant that I had never seen before, but I’m so drawn to. It has these intriguing and mysterious red leaves. It can even bloom delicate pink flowers, which starkly contrast the ferocious looking red leaves.
Shop Now on Rooted
This one looks more red and it’s half of the price of The Sill one โ I always love a good price! These plants are toxic to pets and can be a little more high maintenance, so be sure you’re someone pretty confident in your plant parent skills with these.
10. Tradescantia Zebrina
Shop now on Bloomscape
This is one of my favorites on this list. There’s something so charming about its small leaves with subtle purple stripes. And fortunately for me, it’s quite easy to care for and does well in a variety of environments. So if you’re a beginner, this is a great plant for you! It’s also on the affordable end, which is awesome.
11. Pink Anthurium
Shop now on The Sill
Here’s a classic pink anthurium for you. These plants are probably best described as intermediate โ they’re not as picky as it gets, but they’re not super easy to care for either.
This one reminds me of Animal Crossing (a game I love playing on my Nintendo Switch ๐) because I have one of these in my virtual home on Animal Crossing. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, don’t worry about it lol. But if you know, I love that!!
12. Costa Farms Aglaonema Live Indoor Plant, 14-Inches Tall, Ships in White-Natural Dรฉcor Planter
Shop now on Amazon
This plant is super appealing with so many leaves and that pop of red around the edges. I think that this would add a lot of texture and dimension to a room that needs some plant life in it. Plus, this plant is a great price for how tall it is โ it’s 14 inches tall.
13. American Plant Exchange Stromanthe Tricolor Easy Care Live Prayer Plant, 6″ Pot, Indoor/Outdoor Air Purifier
Shop now on Amazon
You really can’t beat Amazon’s prices for their plants, this is another affordable plant that has really pretty colorful leaves! It’s a plant that’s safe for pets to be around and it also is not super picky with its environment, making it an ideal beginner plant.
14. CTS AIR PLANTS Anacampseros Sunrise Succulents Small Cluster Anacampseros Telephiastrum Variegata
Shop now on Amazon
Not gonna lie, I have no idea how to take care of air plants. But this one is a little cutie from Amazon and it’s super affordable, so I wanted to include it in case you happen to be an air plant aficionado! Or maybe you just want to become one. That’s good too.
15. Purple Passion Plant
Shop now on Rooted
I saved the funkiest for last โ this purple plant, fondly named “Prince” has little purple furry hairs on its leaves. It may look fussy, but it actually is a very beginner friendly plant. So if you need a plant that can stomach some neglect, this could be the one for you! And it is pet friendly as well.
I hope that you found some colorful indoor plants that you’re excited to order! These colorful plants will add immediate brightness and life to your home. I love how each one has its own quirks.
