When you’re looking to frame extra large wall art, it can be hard to find large wall art frames for a reasonable price. That’s exactly why I made this list of the best places to buy frames for your large wall art.
If you have a large piece of art that you need framed, this is for you. I’ve been there, and I get it. From personal experience and from doing some additional research to see what I would do differently now, I narrowed down the top 5 best places to buy large wall art frames.
These are the top 5 best places to buy large wall art frames for your very large wall art. Each one is listed with its pros and cons, so that you can find the one that suits your needs.
This post is all about large wall art frames. Let’s get into the list!
Michael’s
Shop now on Michael’s
Michael’s has such a great selection, reasonable prices, and it’s literally a store meant for this kind of thing. It’s often worth checking to see if Michael’s has what you need, because if they do, it may cut the cost by quite a bit. I’ve gotten many frames from Michael’s before and they stand next to the other frames in my house and look just as good as the more expensive ones.
As great as Michael’s can be for standard frame sizes, they are not going to have the super huge frame sizes that you really need to go to a customizable store for. You can toggle through the different dimensions online to see what they have or even go in store (you never know when you might luck out) but their affordable selection comes with its limitations.
Pros
- Affordable
- Large selection of frame sizes (with some limitations)
Cons
- Not customizable
- Not the easiest online shopping experience (personally, I always end up going in store with Michael’s)
Simply Framed
Shop now on Simply Framed
Simply Framed is a more expensive option, but it is so convenient. It’s a service that breaks down this whole process into three easy steps: 1) you choose your frame, 2) you mail in your art, and 3) they build and ship your frame (with your art in it!) so it arrives back at your door. The one catch is that you do have to mail in your art, which I could see being a little challenging in some cases.
Other than going to a local frame store, this is definitely the most customizable option. It’s pretty expensive, but sometimes for really large artwork you need to go the custom route so that you can get exactly what you need. This is not something you necessarily need to consider doing for every framed photo and piece of artwork in your home but for the large stuff it would really be worth it.
Pros
- Highly customizable
- Super convenient
- Can be done completely online and from home
Cons
- Expensive
- You have to mail in your art which could be a challenge in some cases
West Elm
Shop now on West Elm
West Elm carries a large selection of frames and they are very, very beautiful. The great thing about West Elm frames is that they are so beautiful, and it makes it really hard to pick something that you won’t like. If you love a well curated selection, this is the shopping experience for you.
My family has a lot of West Elm frames in our house. They’re great frames for creating gallery walls and moments where you want multiple frames with the same look in one space. That’s what we often use West Elm frames for, at least.
It is helpful to keep in mind how the costs add up with West Elm though, because it’s almost as expensive as going custom with your frames, except without that extra help with the actual framing process.
Pros
- Easy shopping experience
- Beautiful options (it’s hard to make a wrong choice with their selection)
- Large selection of frame sizes
Cons
- Not customizable
- Expensive
Target
Shop now on Target
Target is such a fantastic option for standard frame sizes, but their large frame sizes are a lot more limited. Like Michael’s, it’s worth looking because they have such great prices, but don’t be surprised if they don’t have exactly what you’re looking for.
They have a smaller selection than most of these other stores, and they don’t have a customizable option, but they do in general have really good frames, so they had to be on here in case they do have what you need.
Pros
- Easy shopping experience
- Affordable
- Great look and quality for the price
Cons
- Not a large selection of options
- Smallest selection of large frames
- Not customizable
Amazon
Shop now on Amazon
I have mixed feelings about getting large wall art frames on Amazon because it is awesome for when you know exactly what you want. When you know exactly the size and color preferences you have and can type them directly into the search bar, it’s a great time to check out Amazon.
However, if you don’t know exactly what you’re going for, it’s not the best place to start your search. Sorry to say it, but some of their choices are simply not cute, and it’s not fun to look at that when you’re trying to get inspiration and start cultivating a vision for what you want.
Amazon has its moments where it can be great for buying large wall art frames, but it doesn’t make the shopping experience super easy or inspiring if you don’t know exactly what you want.
Pros
- Easy to order online
- Affordable
Cons
- Hard to find a beautiful frame that’s also the right size
- Difficult to browse options
- Not customizable
Local frame store
There are certain things that you can do at a local frame store that you can’t do anywhere else. For example, you could buy your frames at Michael’s based on the size of the frame, but with a matte inside that is not the right size for the artwork you want to put in that frame.
Then you could take the art and the frame to a local frame store and have them make a matte that’s the right size. This is a really helpful tip for when you are making a gallery wall, or even when you want to hang two or three frames that are all the same size next to each other.
If you already know the art that you want, you can simply get large frames that are all the same size and that are big enough to fit all of the art you have, and then get the mattes sized up at a local frame store. I’ve done this before and was so happy with the results.
Pros
- Highly customizable
- Supporting local business
Cons
- Expensive (most likely the most expensive option, although it may compare well to Simply Framed)
- May take a little longer
- No online shopping option
