This post is all about reading nook ideas for adults. Let’s get right into it! ๐
1. Create a comfy place to sit or lie down
Having a cozy spot to land at the end of a long day is one of the best feelings there is. Sometimes it’s all I look forward to in a day. And I’m not talking about your bed! I’m talking about a reading nook.
You need a place where you can get comfortable and cozy up for a while. The more inviting your reading nook is to you, the more you’ll read in it! It’s really that simple. Taking a little extra care to set up an area that you love is so worth it.
Comfy chairs are literally the BEST, and I found a few from Urban Outfitters Home that I’m obsessed with. I have to share them with you. The first one is simply such a good price for how cute it is and it’s fluffy and white so what’s not to love about that? The other one that looks so comfy and gets awesome reviews is a lot pricier, but it’s really pretty.
A floor cushion is also really nice to have in case you feel like sitting on the floor and leaning up against your chair, or if you want to use your reading nook to meditate in as well. Floor cushions are honestly really underrated because they’re quite useful. Plus they look cute!
2. Put your books on display โ maybe even create an invisible bookshelf
Putting your books on display is a must for your reading nook. How you choose to do so is entirely up to you! I wanted to share this invisible bookshelf idea because it’s one that has been catching my eye recently. Maybe because it looks so cool??
The good news is: it’s super easy to create your own invisible bookshelf. AND better yet, it’s quite inexpensive (especially compared to a regular bookshelf!).
All you have to do to recreate this invisible bookshelf look is use these metal shelves from Amazon that will disappear into your wall once you place books on them. So simple yet so genius!
3. Add cozy lighting to your reading nook to make it more calming and relaxing
Warm and cozy lighting helps to set the mood to be perfect for feeling cozy in your reading nook. Goodbye overhead lighting and helloooo lamp lighting ๐
This pin looks like it’s using a sunset lamp to create this orange glow. I personally love string lights (especially these star string lights). Aย little mushroom lamp also would work great.
There are a lot of different ways that you can add light to your reading nook. A lamp is probably the easiest, and string lights add a cute and whimsical touch.
4. Try organizing your books by color to create a rainbow ๐
This is something that I’ve seen people do for a while now, and it seems like a perfect idea to try out in a reading nook! Organizing your books by color is a fun way to display your books and to keep them organized on your shelves.
Honestly, this is the type of thing that I could see myself experimenting with and then changing later on. I don’t mind the look of books being all mixed up by color, but it’s such an easy switch that it seems so worth it to give the color organizing thing a try to see how you like it.
While we’re talking about books, I have to tell you some of the best books that I’ve read recently (not that anyone asked ๐). I loved While We Were Dating by Jasmine Guillory because I flew through it (and I’m usually a slow reader, so that was a good feeling ๐). The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller is also really good and instantly became one of my favorite books that I’ve read โ it was such a good story! I also loved Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid because it was funny and extremely relevant.
If you’re in need of a cute coffee table book to put on display, I have a post with over 20 coffee table books that I love. Most of them are super affordable, too. And there’s no shame in having something like a magazine or a coffee table book in your reading nook, either. Sometimes you need something light, something visual, and something easy.
5. Bring in colors that you love with cozy blankets and pillows
Textiles add so much warmth and coziness to a reading nook, and they’re totally necessary in my opinion. Curling up with a book and a blanket is one of the finer things in life.
If you’re looking for a new cute and inexpensive throw pillow, these corduroy pillows from Amazon are perfect. These pillows with cute little tassels along the edge are really cute too (and these ones come in so many different colors).
Also, if you’re a blanket hoarder like I am, having a big blanket basket that actually looks nice is the best. I love this one from Amazon. It’s so neutral and you can keep it right next to your cozy spot in your reading nook so that you can grab a blanket easily when you need it.
6. Make sure that you have a side table as a little area to put a drink or a snack
If you don’t love a snack while you’re reading I can’t relate because that is one of the most iconic combos in my life. Eating while reading is just next level.
A side table is an essential element to your reading nook for your glass of water, your snack, your phone, your bookmark, etc. Maybe even a glass of wine. These are cozy reading nook ideas for adults, after all! Haha. But the side table doesn’t need to be super big, either. You can sneak in a little one if you need to conserve space.
This side table from Urban Outfitters Home is a really cute and simple one I found that isn’t too big. It’s pretty narrow, so it can slip into a smaller space. I love the look of it, too!
7. Place a plant on a bookshelf or on your side table to add a little bit of natural greenery to your reading nook
The finishing touch to any reading nook is a little plant! If you’re not sure if you’re ready to be a plant parent yet, feel free to go faux or skip this step completely. However, a plant adds natural greenery and every inspiration photo for cozy reading nooks that I saw and really loved included a plant somewhere. Had to let you in on the secret ๐ haha.
To shop for plants, I usually go to a local garden center, but you can buy plants online now too which is really cool. I know that The Sill sells plants online and they look beautiful, but I’ve never ordered from them myself. If you try it out, let me know how it is!
That’s it for this post all about cozy reading nooks for adults. My goal is always to help you make your home feel like it reflects a little bit of who you are and makes you feel good when you’re in it.
And most of all, I hope that these ideas helped to inspire you to create your own cozy reading nook ๐ฅฐ it’s the perfect way to create a small space in your home that’s completely dedicated to calm relaxation.
